A case of infanticide in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus nigritus) Mastozool. neotrop.
Izar,Patrícia; Ramos-da-Silva,Eduardo D.; de-Resende,Briseida D.; Ottoni,Eduardo B..
According to behavioural ecology, infanticide by males would be an adaptive reproductive strategy because it allows faster fertilization of the females and reduces investment in unrelated offspring. Critics of this view indicate the lack of evidence of the behaviour for several primate species, hence the relevance of reports of observed infanticide events. Here we report a case of infant killing in a free-ranging group of tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus nigritus).

A centuries old problem in nephtheid taxonomy approached using DNA data (Coelenterata: Alcyonacea) Naturalis
Ofwegen, L.P. van; Groenenberg, D.S.J..
The current centuries old classification of the family Nephtheidae is still mostly based on colony morphology. In this family the Indo-Pacifc genera Litophyton, Nephthea, Dendronephthya and Stereonephthya, and the Atlantic genus Neospongodes form a complex mix of closely related, poorly described species which cannot be recognized using only colony morphology. Attempts with the more modern approach of comparing skeleton composition (sclerites) have been only partly successful because of the extreme variation of sclerite forms present in these genera. The genus Chromonephthea Van Ofwegen, 2005, introduced for several species previously assigned to Dendronephthya, Nephthea and Stereonephthya, was established with sclerite morphology, but the true generic...

A century of warfare shoots holes in anti-Caulerpa campaign Nature Precedings

Effort to have all varieties of the marine alga Caulerpa taxifolia listed as noxious weeds hinges on the argument that the alga's proliferation in the Mediterranean Sea is a cause and not a consequence of environmental degradation. Until now, the occurrence of two populations in a pristine part of the northern Mediterranean near the island of Porquerolles has upheld this claim. Here we show that the alga's development at Porquerolles is indeed a consequence of environmental degradation caused by military weapons' impacts on seagrass beds during the last century. The available data show that substratum enrichment plays a key role in fostering development of Caulerpa, irrespective of whether this results directly from pollution or...

A CGE-Analysis of Energy Policies Considering Labor Market Imperfections and Technology Specifications AgEcon
Kuster, Robert; Ellersdorfer, Ingo; Fahl, Ulrich.
The paper establishes a CGE/MPSGE model for evaluating energy policy measures with emphasis on their employment impacts. It specifies a dual labor market with respect to qualification, two different mechanisms for skill specific unemployment, and a technology detailed description of electricity generation. Non clearing of the dual labor market is modeled via minimum wage constraints and via wage curves. The model is exemplarily applied for the analysis of capital subsidies on the application of technologies using renewable energy sources. Quantitative results highlight that subsidies on these technologies do not automatically lead to a significant reduction in emissions. Moreover, if emission reductions are achieved these might actually partly result from...

A Choice Model with Systematic Structures in Decision Weights AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang.
This article introduces a discrete choice model which incorporates a nonlinear structural adjustment to the standard utility coefficients or decision weights. The proposed model is theoretically and empirically appealing when compared to several alternative approaches, and it can be estimated by conventional maximum likelihood. Application of the proposed model in a case study shows that it outperforms two competing approaches in model fit. Given its simplicity, this model is also capable of revealing consumers' heterogeneous choices. It is shown that based on consumers' different characteristics, their product choice and its welfare implications are also potentially different.

A Choice: Standards for Sale or Open Access? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
The Australian National Standard for Organic and Bio-Dynamic Produce was first issued in 1992, and revised editions have appeared in 1998, 2002 and 2007. It is an export standard and serves as a de facto domestic standard. It is currently freely available for download. There is a proposaal that the copyright residing in organic standards in Australia be relinquished to a private company which licences and profits from the sale of standards. This article questions this standards-for-sale model and asks whether the community and the organic cause are better served by the standard remaining as an Open Access document, rather than a pay-per-view document.

A collaborative research initiative for the environmental management of ostrich production Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Rodrigues,GS; Buschinelli,CC de A; Rodrigues,IA; Medeiros,CB.
A collaborative research initiative was proposed by the Federation of Cooperatives of Ostrich Producers of Southeastern Brazil (FECOAVESTRUZ-Sudeste) and Embrapa Environment to training technicians and to develop environmental management procedures in order to establish criteria for the definition of 'Terms of Reference' for sustainable ostrich production for FECOAVESTRUZ associates. Eight farms with different scales of operation were selected by FECOAVESTRUZ-Sudeste for the application of 'integrated environmental indicator systems', designed to develop Environmental Management Reports and to propose best management practices in the farms. The results showed that, in general, indicators relative to Use of inputs and resources, Use of veterinary inputs and...

A Common 34C>G Variant at the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor γ2- Gene in Chilean Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Controls International Journal of Morphology
Guzmán,Neftalí; Erices,Leonardo; Valdés,Patricio; Salazar,Luis A.
The 34C>G (Prol2Ala) polymorphic variant of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ2 (PPAR-γ2) gene has been associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, the results between populations are contradictory. Thus, in the present study was investigated the possible association between 34C>G polymorphism at the PPAR-γ2 gene and PCOS in Chilean women. A total of 50 unrelated women (29.1 + 8.1 years) with diagnosis of PCOS and 75 healthy controls (29.3+ 9.3 years) were included in this study. Serum lipids, glucose and uric acid levels were determined by enzymatic-colorimetric methods. The 34C>G variant in the PPAR-γ2 gene was analyzed by PCR-RFLP. Women with PCOS exhibited a higher levels of...

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF FOOD QUALITY ASSURANCE SCHEMES: THE CASE OF NEULAND AND EUREPGAP AgEcon
Gay, Stephan Hubertus; Schneider, Andreas.
Food Quality Assurance Schemes (QAS) are widely applied in the European Union. Neuland and EurepGAP represent two different approaches. Neuland differentiates meat clearly by a strict emphasis on rules regarding animal welfare to provide consumers with meat produced at a high animal welfare standard. EurepGAP certifies the compliance to international accepted standards with regard to Good Agricultural Practise to ease the exchange of products throughout the supply chain. In terms of overall benefits and costs, the study showed that for both QAS the benefits clearly outweigh the costs. This paper compares the schemes and their implications for the agro-food chain.

A Comparative Analysis of the Development of the United States and European Union Biodiesel Industries AgEcon
Carriquiry, Miguel A..
Worldwide production of biodiesel is growing at a rapid pace. Arguably, the European Union (EU) is the global leader in biodiesel production, but the United States has recently expanded its production. The growth of the biodiesel industry in both regions has been fueled by a series of government-provided financial incentives. However, the timing of the growth and incentive provisions, the nature of the main incentives, and the market conditions differ across regions. This article provides a comparative analysis of the EU and U.S. biodiesel industries, highlighting market and policy aspects that are leading to a rapid but distinct growth.

A Comparative Analysis of the Meat Sector in Hungary and Emilia-Romagna: Performance and Efficiency AgEcon
Brasili, Cristina; Fanfani, Roberto; Maccarini, Elisa Ricci; Monasterolo, Irene.
In the last years, a lot of important changes occurred inside the European Union after the entering of 12 new member States. The rate of economic growth of the new member States has been higher the other EU members. In Hungary, particularly, the growth level has reached an intermediate position, placing itself at 4% GDP per capita. Comparative analysis are needed to better understand the process of catching-up and to evaluate how the integration between EU regions and countries is going on. The aim of this paper is to compare the economic and efficiency performance of firms in Hungary and Emilia-Romagna, considering a specific sector, meat processing and storage, of the food industry). We will investigate if in the last years the integration process has...

A comparative profitability analysis of organic and conventional farms in Emilia-Romagna and in Minnesota Organic Eprints
Canavari, Maurizio; Ghelfi, Rino; Olson, Kent D.; Rivaroli, Sergio.
Recent discussion surrounding organic agriculture (also referred to as organic farming) has turned from just whether it represents a viable alternative to conventional agriculture to whether it would be adopted by a significant percentage of farmers. After a beginning phase in which the adoption was mainly due to an ethically based choice of the farmer, the success in the market and the increasing demand for organic products are increasing the number of farmers converting their farming system. Despite the continuing importance of non-economic factors and the uncertainty given by short-term and mid-term fluctuations of prices, a decisive point is whether the conversion to organic farming may be worthwhile from an economic perspective. The aim of the paper...

A comparative Raman spectroscopic study of natural gas hydrates collected at different geological sites ArchiMer
Chazallon, B; Focsa, C; Charlou, Jean-luc; Bourry, Christophe; Donval, Jean-pierre.
Intact natural gas hydrates recovered on the West Aftican margin in the South Atlantic Ocean (ZaiAngo and Neris IIrojects) and from the Norwegian Sea (Hakon Mosby Mud Volcano) are investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy at ambient pressure and low temperature. The gas hydrates collected at different geological sites contain a high methane concentration relative to other minor components that are slightly dispersed in the samples. They crystallize in a type I cubic lattice structure as also confirmed by our preliminary synchrotron diffraction results obtained on the ZaiAngo specimen. However, detailed analysis of selected microscopic areas reveals a variation in the gas distribution among the different specimens. Trace amounts of CO2 and H2S can be...
